Pest of the Month: Mice

No matter the season, mice can find their way into your home, infesting a space quickly. Take the steps necessary to protect your home, yard, and garage from the presence of mice. Let’s look deeper at our Beeline pest of the month.

Mice in Your Home

After humans, mice are the second most populous mammal that can be found in urban areas. These pests are not only dangerous, but can be highly destructive in the home as well. All infestations should be taken care of as quickly as possible to prevent future problems from arising.

Especially during the winter months, mice are looking for a warm and comfortable place where they can make their nest. A steady food source will also bring the pests inside. These pests carry disease, viruses, and bacteria, making them dangerous in your home. If you have found a mouse infestation, approach it with caution. Even cleaning up their droppings can transmit dangerous diseases including salmonellosis.

When given the right environment, mice will quickly multiply and take over an area. Even just two mice can turn into over 200 in only a matter of months. Because of this it is important to take action immediately.

Preventing an Infestation

Because of how quickly they can multiply, it is best to prevent their presence before they can even enter. Some of the most important steps to take to prevent a mouse infestation include:

  • Keep your home clean – mice are survivors. They can make themselves at home with little resources. If you have food stored in an area of your home or garage, mice will work to find it. Keep your kitchen clean, always removing excess food from the counters and sink.
  • Store your food right – you’d be surprised how easily mice are able to find food in the home. If you store dog food in the garage, don’t leave it in the bag it comes in. Make sure to put it inside an airtight container to keep the mice out.
  • Seal the cracks – a mouse can fit through a crack even just ¼ an inch wide. Use caulking to seal up the cracks around your home, preventing them from entering in the first place.

Prevent a mice infestation before it happens. If mice do invade your home, call Beeline Pest Control as soon as the problem is discovered. Taking care of their presence early on will reduce the chance of damage and danger.
