About the Boxelder Bugs

The boxelder bug only reaches about half an inch in length, but their numbers and persistence create a pest that is challenging for all to manage. It has small wings that are oval in shape. The majority of their bodies are black in coloring with some distinguishing red markings.

These pests will get into box elder, maple, and ash trees during the warm months of spring and summer. It is during the cold winter months that the boxelder bugs will move into homes and hibernate. Because of this, it is important to take steps now to prevent an infestation from making its way into the walls of your home and office. These pests will cause problems not only for your home, but for the plant life in your yard.

Signs of Boxelder Bugs

Boxelder bugs are destructive when they infest an area. Not only are their sheer numbers noticeable, but they will kill off plant life in an area, including trees. This destruction will continue over a period of time until all the plant life in your yard is destroyed. Boxelder bugs can be found in the house near the warm areas of the home. This includes close to the furnace. In addition to this, their droppings can be found on furniture and clothing, leaving obvious stains. If you come across this in your home, look deeper for the cause.

Preventing the Bugs

The easiest way to fight against a boxelder bug infestation is to stop them before they ever have the chance to enter the home. A number of things must be done for this to happen, including:

  • Seal the cracks in your home. This includes cracks in the foundation, the siding, and the roof. In addition to this, the caulking around the windows and doors should be free of cracking and other problems. These places seem small, but boxelder bugs will search them out, granting themselves easy access.
  • Get rid of the trees they reside in. While you may love your maple tree, it might be attracting boxelder bugs, doing more damage than good. If you see any signs of an infestation, cut down the trees and remove them before damage can happen.
  • Bring praying mantis into your yard. This bug is the natural predator to these pests, and will work to remove them from your yard.

Be diligent in watching for pests in your yard. Take control of the situation before it can turn into a full on infestation. If you are dealing with a boxelder bug population this fall, call for professional help. This will better protect your home and belongings, eliminating these pests.
